‘They Don’t Need Your Permission’: Trump’s government auto-enrolled millions into military draft — December is coming

For the first time in decades, millions of young American men will no longer have a choice about whether they sign up for the military draft. The Trump administration is moving forward with a plan to automatically register eligible men into the Selective Service System by December 2026. Nobody asked for their permission.

The Selective Service System is the federal agency responsible for maintaining a database of men who could be called up to serve in the military during a national emergency. It submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30. That rule is currently under review and awaiting finalization.

Under the new policy, men will be automatically registered within 30 days of their 18th birthdays. The government will pull their information directly from existing federal data sources. No form to fill out, no action required, and no opt-out offered.

Most men between the ages of 18 and 25 were already legally required to register with the Selective Service. But the automatic registration mandate was quietly signed into law in December 2025 as part of the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Congress included it as a cost-saving measure.

The change, according to the Selective Service website, “transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources.” In plain terms, the government is now doing it for you, whether you want it to or not.

The United States has not had an active military draft since the Vietnam War ended in 1973. Military service has been entirely voluntary ever since. But the infrastructure for a potential draft has never gone away.

Former President Jimmy Carter revived the Selective Service registration requirement in 1980, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He argued the registry was necessary in the event of a national emergency. That decision has shaped U.S. military policy ever since.

Now, that registry is once again at the center of a national conversation. Many Americans are asking serious questions about the draft amid the ongoing war in Iran, which is currently in a fragile two-week ceasefire. The timing of this policy change is not lost on anyone.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the subject in March. She said a draft is “not part of the current plan right now.” She also added that President Trump “wisely keeps his options on the table.”

That carefully worded answer did little to calm public concern. It confirmed that the possibility of a draft has not been completely ruled out. For millions of young men and their families, that is not a reassuring statement.

It is important to note that Trump cannot reinstate the draft on his own. Congress would need to pass new legislation amending the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the president to actually induct people into the military. Executive action alone is not enough.

Still, the consequences of not being registered are serious and far-reaching. Failure to register is considered a federal crime. It can block access to federal student financial aid, disqualify individuals from many government jobs, and cut off eligibility for job training programs under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

The penalties can also include a fine of up to $250,000 and up to five years in prison. Immigrants who fail to register risk losing their path to U.S. citizenship. The stakes could not be higher.

Women remain exempt from Selective Service registration under current law. Lawmakers have made multiple attempts in recent years to include women in the draft as part of annual defense legislation. Each time, those provisions have been stripped out before a final vote.

The automatic registration rule is still being reviewed by federal regulators. But if it is finalized on schedule, the system will be fully in place by December 2026. For young men turning 18 across America, the government will not be waiting for them to show up anymore.

It will already know who they are.
